Although they take different stances, Herbert and Thomas both believe that the American dream is threatened, if not dead. King, however, writes that the American dream is still very alive. Write an essay explaining why you believe the American dream is indeed dead or still alive and well. What is “the American dream?” Who is responsible for the decline of the American dream (if you believe it is in decline), and who is responsible for reviving it? If the dream is still alive, how so? What is it that naysayers are missing? 2.) The American dream has commonly been defined as the ability to find a job that allows people to buy a home, send their children to college, and retire comfortably. Although Herbert, Thomas, and King all have different views about the status of the American Dream, none of them directly challenge this old notion. Write an essay explaining what “the American Dream” should be. What should we be striving for as individuals? as a nation? Is it realistic to still aim for the old notion of the American Dream?
